League History

Grosse Pointe Woods-Shores Little League (GPWSLL) was established in 1954 and provides boys and girls baseball and softball programs for kids ages 5-18.

The league is managed by a board of up to 20 members that work to make sure the organization, competition and governance is in place to serve the community’s expectations. The league constitution states,

The objective of GPWSLL shall be to instill the principles of good sportsmanship, commitment, responsibility, teamwork, discipline, honesty, loyalty and respect for authority, through an organized youth baseball program.

The league has partnered with neighboring Little League franchises in the other three Grosse Pointe cities plus Harper Woods to create a girls softball program as well.

The league plays games at city and school fields in Grosse Pointe Woods and Grosse Pointe Shores. The league works with the schools to use, maintain and improve fields at Mason and Monteith Elementary Schools. Additionally, the league works with Grosse Pointe Shores to use, maintain and improve Vernier Field at Ford-Schroeder Park. Ghesquiere Park, in Grosse Pointe

Woods is the most popular location for the league with five fields, batting cages and a concession stand operated by the league. Most fields are busy 6-7 days a week from April through June.

The league is focused on creating opportunities for kids of all ages, ability and interest. The most recognized program is the 12 and under (12U) baseball teams, thanks to popularity of the international tournament which culminates in the televised Little League World Series every August in Williamsport, PA. However, there are other divisions of play that include t-ball, machine/coach pitch, softball, and older programs depending on interest in the community. Participation in the local GPWSLL is governed by the Rule and Regulations of Little League International. Currently, kids can register in the appropriate level based on age so long as they reside or attend any school in Grosse Pointe Woods or Grosse Pointe Shores.

Pointes of Pride

The league is proud of the impact it has on the community, kids and families over the years. There have been countless players in GPWSLL that have played baseball and softball long after their Little League years by playing at the high school, college and even  professional level.

The league creates ‘tournament teams’ annually to complete in state wide tournaments in each age bracket. The international tournament for baseball and softball is the 12U age group. While the softball program is relatively new, the baseball program sent 8  teams all the way to the state championship game since the first tournament in 1958. GPWSLL has won 5 of those games. That is the most wins and most appearances of any local league in the state.

The league has also had success at the national level as the only league from Michigan sending more than one team to the Little League World Series. In fact, GPWSLL accounts for 3 of the 10 teams from Michigan to appear in the series in 1979, 2013 and 2017.
