What are the league divisions and where should my child play?
T-Ball: For our youngest players, ages 5-6, T-Ball is our first developmental league. Games are played at Mason School. The season begins in late April and continues through mid June. Rosters are created based upon schools the players attend.
Collegiate League: Primarily 7-8 year-olds, and older 6 year-olds who have played T-Ball and want to advance to the next level. Collegiate is a development league where coaches pitch to the players and players learn more about baseball positions, base running and strategy. Games are played at Monteith Elementary School and Ghesquiere Park. The season begins in late April and continues through mid June. Rosters are created based upon schools the players attend.
AA League: Primarily 9 year-olds and those older 7-8 year-olds who have played Collegiate and want to advance to the next level. AA is our first competitive level. Six inning games are played, umpires are provided, players pitch, outs are recorded and players learn positions. Results and Standings are recorded and at the end of the season playoffs determine the AA Championship. Games are played at Vernier Field and Ghesquiere Park. The season begins in late April and runs through mid June. In AA we determine a player’s skill during tryouts and distribute players to different teams to establish an equal balance of talent across the league. The Little League Board will evaluate any prospective 7-8 year olds during tryouts. If a 7-8 year old player is not ready for AA he/she will be placed on a Collegiate Team. Typically there are eight AA teams.
AAA League: For 10-12 year-olds who may not want to play Major League baseball, cannot commit to the schedule or are not drafted into the Major Leagues. Results and Standings are recorded and playoffs determine the AAA Championship. Games are played at Ghesquiere Park. The Season begins in late April and runs through mid June. In AAA we determine a player’s skill during tryouts and distribute players to different teams to establish an equal balance of talent across the league. Typically there are eight AAA teams.
Major League: For 9-12 year-olds who are selected through our annual draft. This is our premier, competitive league for players 9-12. Major league teams require a big commitment with games and practicing six days per week. Games are played at Ghesquiere Park. The Season begins in late April and continues through mid June. Major League Results and Standings are recorded. At the end of the season playoffs determine the Major League Championship. There are typically eight Major League teams.
Junior and Senior League: For 13-17 year-olds who wish to continue to play baseball in Grosse Pointe. This league provides an advanced baseball experience with larger diamonds. Teams play other GPWS teams and teams from other local communities. Games are played at Ghesquiere Park and other area diamonds. The Season begins after the High School baseball season is complete.
When does it all start?
Registration begins in January. After tryouts (check back here for dates) and registration is complete, teams are formed and schedules are determined. Coaches will begin contacting parents and organizing practices in mid April. Games typically start during the last week of April or the first week of May.
When is Opening Day?
Opening Day is a our start of the season and is comprised of a parade, games, team photos and ceremonies. The parade occurs on Mack Avenue. Opening Day games and ceremonies are at Ghesequiere Park. Coaches will contact parents to organize teams for Opening Day.
Where do I get player uniforms?
GPWS Little League provides uniforms to all players. Uniforms are distributed by coaches before the season begins.
Should I include my son/daughter in the Major League Draft?
The Majors is our premium league and requires considerable commitment by both players and parents. Major League teams practice or play 6-7 days per week. Major League players are expected to attend all practices and games. All players ages 9-12 are eligible for draft into our Major Leagues. If your son or daughter cannot make the Major League commitment, we recommend you do not include your player in the draft (why take the spot of another player if you aren’t sure). Our league has a spot for everyone who wants to play baseball. Our AA and AAA Leagues are fun, competitive and a great baseball experience. If a player is not drafted into the Majors they will be placed on a AA or AAA team.
Who are the Coaches and Board Members? Coaches and Board Members are volunteer dads and moms. All coaches, volunteers and board members are required to participate in a background check.
